From the Plate of GettysburgGerry – Dining Choices in Gettysburg Pa

Gettysburg Nite Life

It amazes me how often I get contact from people out of the area inquiring about dining choices for their upcoming visit to Gettysburg Pa. Most often I hear from people that have read a blog about a Gettysburg historic home or Gettysburg Battlefield story, sometimes one of my blogs, sometimes not, but somehow I have become the Internet food critic for the area. A title I happily accept.

One great thing about Gettysburg is that there are some wonderful choices here. Everything from fine dining to take out, all are available in a fairly compact geographical area, close to the Gettysburg Battlefield, as well as Gettysburg borough. I have compiled a list of some of my favorite places to dine, whether you lean to Irish, Italian, Mexican, or just good old fashioned comfort food, I have some suggestions. So after a long day of touring the famous Gettysburg National Military Park, or you have walking the Gettysburg Borough touring the historic homes of Gettysburg, take some time and stop in to one of these wonderful eateries.

If you are going to be in the Gettysburg Adams County Pa area the week of April 4 – 11, 2011, be sure and take advantage of Gettysburg Restaurant Week. This is first time event and promises to be a big hit here in Gettysburg.

Here is a list of some my favorites by category, remember these are my own personal favorites, I encourage you to explore and make your own choices.

Fine Dining: The Cashtown Inn, in my mind the best restaurant in Adams County. However there is a second choice which I think comes in right on it’s heels, Sidney. Either choice will be sure to impress.

Meat Lovers: hands down the Friday night Prime Rib @ Centuries on the Square. Right at heart of Gettysburg Pa, on the square., request a window table.

Comfort Food, about the biggest and best menu for this group is O’Rorkes.Located on Steinwehr Ave

Italian, right off the square sits one of my local favorites Mamma Ventura serves up some wonderful authentic dishes. I love their Baked Ziti

Irish, no one beats the Garryowen Irish Pub, the food, the atmosphere is all Irish. It truly is like stepping into Ireland here, including the food.

Asian/Sushi, the best place around is Pings, there are many take places for Chinese, but for a combo of Chinese and Sushi Pings is your place.

French, Yes you can get French food in Gettysburg Pa. The Cafe Saint Amand does a great representing the French cuisine. Enjoy a little bit of Paris among the Confederates.

These are just a few choices, it should be noted that except the Cashtown Inn & Sidney all of these restaurants are within walking distance of each other. You could, you start your evening early enough take a walking/eating tour of Gettysburg Pa. Remember this is only a partial list of restaurants in Gettysburg borough, take some time to explore and find your own favorites.

Steppin Out in Gettysburg Pa

  Gettysburg NiteLife

Last night it got down to 9 degrees in Gettysburg Pa. It was a Saturday night and I think half the town had the same attitude as my wife and I, let’s get out for a bit. Gettysburg has had a mild winter as far as snow is concerned thus far, but it has been cold and those that live in a winter climate understand that “cabin fever” that occasionally sets in . Well apparently there was a mutual consensus among the residents of Gettysburg that last night was the night to cure the fever.

A little Gettysburg NiteLife was in store for GettysburgGerry. First up was dinner at one of the restaurants that make up the Gateway complex. Gateway Gettysburg is fairly new complex  to Gettysburg. It features two hotels, The Wyndam Gettysburg, and the Courtyard Marriot Gettysburg as well as Gateway Theater complex. The complex also offers three different dining choices, The 1863 Restaurant, the Old Eagle Grill, and our choice for the evening Garbaldi’s. Dining at Gateway Gettysburg makes dining a pleasurable experience.

Garibaldi’s offers old world Italian dishes as well as hand crafted pizza’s baked in wood fired pizza oven which has seating around it so you can sit and watch the pizza chef at work. Garibaldi’s has a solid wine list with selections for every taste at affordable prices. We started our meal with the Fried Calamari appetizer and it did not disappoint. The Calamari was golden brown, fresh and the red pepper dipping sauce was outstanding. My wife had the Penne Pasta with Pesto Cream sauce and Grilled Chicken, while I choose the baked Ricotta Cheese Manicotti served on a bed of spinach. Both dishes were excellent, and we topped the whole thing off with a piece of Caramel Creme Brule Cheese cake. The wonderful food combined with outstanding attentive service made our dinner a nice escape from the cold winter reality waiting for us outside.

We capped off the evening at the Blue Parrot Bistro lounge where it seemed the entire town had the same idea. “The Parrot” is a local favorite night spot where Gettysburg gets to mix, business professionals, college student from Gettysburg College, artists, all feel at home the the Parrot. All in all it was a nice evening,  home by 11 pm relaxed, full, and content. Gettysburg Pa may be a small town, but it does have a NiteLife, and a thriving one at that.
